  • Army Staff Sgt. Gary A. Vaillant, 41, of Trujillo, Puerto Rico; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 72nd Armor, Camp Casey, Korea; killed Sept. 5 when his tank ran over an improvised explosive device in Khalidiya, Iraq.

  • Marine Lance Cpl. Ruben Valdez Jr., 21, of San Diego, Texas; assigned to 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, at Twentynine Palms, Calif.; killed April 17 by enemy action in Anbar province, Iraq.

  • Marine Cpl. Ramona M. Valdez, 20, of The Bronx, N.Y.; assigned to Headquarters Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.; killed June 23 when a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device detonated near her convoy vehicle in Fallujah, Iraq.

  • Marine Lance Cpl. Steven A. Valdez, 20, of McRea, Ark.; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii; killed Sept. 26 by enemy mortar fire at Camp Blessing, Afghanistan.

  • Army Sgt. Melissa Valles, 26, Eagle Pass, Texas; assigned to Company B, 64th Forward Support Battalion, Fort Carson, Col.; died of non-combat-related injuries July 9 in Balad, Iraq.

  • Army Sgt. Gene Arden Vance Jr., 38, of Morgantown, W.Va.; assigned to the 19th Special Forces Unit, West Virginia National Guard, Morgantown, W.V.; killed on May 19, 2002, in Afghanistan.

  • Army Spc. Allen J. Vandayburg, 20, of Mansfield, Ohio; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, Vilseck, Germany; killed April 9 when a rocket-propelled grenade struck his vehicle in Barez, Iraq.

  • Army Spc. Jacob T. Vanderbosch, 21, of Vadnais Heights, Minn.; assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.; killed Oct. 3 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee during combat operations in Haqlaniyah, Iraq. Also killed were: Pfc. Roberto C. Baez and Sgt. Bryan W. Large.

  • Army Spc. Josiah H. Vandertulip, 21, of Irving, Texas; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas; killed Oct. 14 when his dismounted patrol came under enemy fire in Baghdad.

  • Army Chief Warrant Officer 3 Brian K. Van Dusen, 39, of Columbus, Ohio; assigned to 571st Air Medical Company, Fort Carson, Colo.; killed when his UH-60 air medical helicopter crashed in the Tigris River in Iraq.

  • Marine Lance Cpl. John J. Van Gyzen IV, 21, of Bristol, Mass.; assigned to 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, at Twentynine Palms, Calif.; killed July 5 by enemy action in Anbar province, Iraq.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Darren D. VanKomen, 33, of Bluefield, W.Va.; assigned to 2nd Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis, Wash.; killed Dec. 21 when his base dining facility was attacked in Mosul, Iraq.

  • Marine Lance Cpl. Gary F. VanLeuven, 20, of Klamath Falls, Ore.; assigned to 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, at Twentynine Palms, Calif.; killed April 17 by enemy action in Anbar province, Iraq.

  • Army Sgt. Daniel Ryan Varnado, 23, of Saucier, Miss.; assigned to C Company, 1st Battalion, 155th Infantry Regiment, Mississippi Army National Guard, Biloxi, Miss.; killed May 23 when his military vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device in Haswa, Iraq. Also killed were Spc. Bryan Edward Barron, Spc. Audrey Daron Lunsford and Staff Sgt. Saburant Parker.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Justin L. Vasquez, 26, of Manzanola, Colo.; assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Carson, Colo.; killed June 5 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his military vehicle in Baghdad. Also killed were Spc. Eric J. Poelman and Pfc. Brian S. Ulbrich.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Mark D. Vasquez, 35, of Port Huron, Mich.; assigned to 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, based in Fort Riley, Kan.; killed in action while riding in a Bradley Fighting Vehicle that was struck by an improvised explosive device on Nov. 8 in Fallujah, Iraq.

  • Army Spc. Brian A. Vaughn, 23, of Pell City, Ala.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.; killed June 21 when his unit was conducting combat operations and was attacked by enemy forces using small-arms fire in Ramadi, Iraq.

  • Army Spc. Frances M. Vega, 20, of Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico; assigned to the 151st Adjutant General Postal Detachment 3, Fort Hood, Texas; killed Nov. 2 in an attack on a CH-47 Chinook helicopter near Fallujah, Iraq.

  • Army 1st Lt. Michael W. Vega, 41, of Lathrop, Calif.; assigned to the 223rd Military Intelligence Company, 223rd Military Intelligence Battalion, Army National Guard, based in Sacramento, Calif.; died March 20 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, in Washington, D.C., from injuries sustained March 11 when his military vehicle rolled over in Diwaniyah, Iraq.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Paul A. Velazquez, 29, of San Diego; assigned to III Corps Artillery at Fort Sill, Okla.; killed Nov. 2 in an attack on a CH-47 Chinook helicopter near Fallujah, Iraq.

  • Army Spc. Jose A. Velez, 23, of Lubbock, Texas; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas; killed Nov. 13 when his unit came under fire while clearing an enemy strongpoint in Fallujah, Iraq.

  • Lance Cpl. Juan C. Venegas, 21, of Simi Valley, Calif.; assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, Calif.; attached to Regimental Combat Team 8, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force; killed April 7 in a vehicle accident while conducting combat operations in Anbar province, Iraq.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Russell J. Verdugo, 34, of Phoenix; assigned to the 767th Ordnance Company, Fort McNair, Washington, D.C.; killed May 23 when an improvised explosive device detonated as he was responding to a report of an improvised explosive device in Baghdad.

  • Marine Corps Cpl. David M. Vicente, 25, of Methuen, Mass.; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, Calif.; killed in action March 19 near Hit, Iraq.

  • Army Sgt. 1st Class Joselito O. Villanueva, 36, of Los Angeles; assigned to the 9th Engineer Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany; killed Sept. 27 when a sniper shot him while he was at his observation post in Balad, Iraq.

  • Army Chief Warrant Officer Johnny Villareal Mata, 35, of Pecos, Texas; assigned to 507th Maintenance Company, Fort Bliss, Texas; killed in an ambush near Nasiriyah, Iraq.

  • Army Pfc. Ramon A. Villatoro Jr., 19, of Bakersfield, Calif.; assigned to 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Carson, Colo.; killed July 24 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Bradley fighting vehicle in Baghdad. Also killed were Staff Sgt. Jason W. Montefering, Spc. Ernest W. Dallas Jr. and Sgt. Milton M. Monzon Jr.

  • Army Sgt. Franklin R. Vilorio , 26, of Miami; assigned to the Brigade Troops Battalion, Division Support Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga., killed Sept. 6 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee causing it to rollover in Baghdad, Iraq. Also killed was Staff Sgt. Jude R. Jonaus.

  • Marine Corps Cpl. Scott M. Vincent, 21, of Bokoshe, Okla.; assigned to 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, at Camp Lejeune, N.C.; killed in action on April 30 in Anbar province, Iraq.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Thomas E. Vitagliano, 33, of New Haven, Conn.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Casey, Korea; killed Jan. 17 when a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device detonated near his position in Ramadi, Iraq. Also killed was Army Pfc. George R. Geer.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Kimberly A. Voelz, 27, of Carlisle, Pa.; assigned to the 703rd Explosive Ordnance Detachment based in Fort Knox, Ky.; killed while responding to an explosive ordnance disposal call Dec. 14 when an improvised explosive device detonated in Iskandariyah, Iraq.

  • Army Sgt. Kenneth G. VonRonn, 20, of Bloomingburg, N.Y.; assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry Regiment, 42nd Infantry Division, New York Army National Guard, New York, N.Y.; killed Jan. 6 with six of his fellow soldiers when an improvised explosive device struck their Bradley fighting vehicle in Baghdad. Also killed were Sgt. 1st Class Kurt J. Comeaux, Sgt. Christopher J. Babin, Spc. Bradley J. Bergeron, Spc. Huey P.L. Fassbender, Spc. Armand L. Frickey and Spc. Warren A. Murphy.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Michael S. Voss, 35, of Aberdeen, N.C.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 120th Infantry Regiment, North Carolina Army National Guard, Wilmington, N.C.; killed Oct. 8 when his convoy vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device and small-arms fire near Tikrit, Iraq.

  • Marine Pfc. Brent T. Vroman, 21, of Oshkosh, Wis.; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Marine Corps Reserve, Chicago; died Dec. 13 of wounds sustained in enemy action in Babil province, Iraq.

  • Army Spc. Thai Vue, 22, of Willows, Calif.; assigned to the 127th Military Police Company, 709th Military Police Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade, V Corps, Hanau, Germany; killed June 18 when a mortar round hit the motor pool where he was working in Baghdad.
