  • Army Chief Warrant Officer (CW2) Scott A. Saboe, 33, of Willow Lake, S.D.; assigned to the 4th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), based in Fort Campbell, Ky.; killed Nov. 15 when two 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters went down in Mosul, Iraq.

  • Army Spc. Rasheed Sahib, 22, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; assigned to 20th Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas; killed by an accidental weapons discharge in Balad, Iraq.

  • Marine Lance Cpl. Gael Saintvil, 24, of Orange, Fla.; assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Hawaii; killed Jan. 26 when the CH-53E helicopter in which he was riding crashed near Rutbah, Iraq. Twenty-nine Marines and one sailor also were killed.

  • Marine Cpl. Rudy Salas, 20, of Baldwin Park, Calif.; assigned to 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.; killed May 20 in a non-combat-related vehicle accident in Anbar province.

  • Marine Cpl. William I. Salazar, 26, of Las Vegas; assigned to Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.; died Oct. 15 of wounds sustained due to enemy action in Anbar province, Iraq.

  • Army Spc. Adriana N. Salem, 21, of Elk Grove Village, Ill.; assigned to the 3rd Forward Support Battalion, Division Support Command, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga.; killed March 4 when her military vehicle rolled over at Forward Operating Base Remagen in Tikrit, Iraq.

  • Army Sgt. 1st Class David J.Salie, 34, of Columbus, Ga.; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Ga.; killed Feb. 14 when an improvised explosive device struck his vehicle in Baqubah, Iraq.

  • Army 1st Lt. Edward M. Saltz, 27, of Bigfork, Mont.; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Armored Division, U.S. Army Reserve, based in Giessen, Germany; killed in action Dec. 22 by an improvised explosive device in Baghdad.

  • Air Force Airman 1st Class Jesse M. Samek, 21, of Rogers, Ark.; assigned to the 66th Rescue Squadron, Nellis Air Force Base, Nev.; died Oct. 21 from injuries he received when an Air Force HH-60 helicopter aircraft crashed during a medical evacuation mission in Afghanistan.

  • Marine Capt. Benjamin W. Sammis, 29, of Rehobeth, Mass.; assigned to the Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 267, Marine Aircraft Group 39, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Camp Pendleton; Calif.; killed in action when his helicopter crashed near Ali Aziziyal, Iraq.

  • Army Spc. Sonny G. Sampler, 23, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; assigned to 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany; killed July 8 during a mortar attack on the Iraqi National Guard Headquarters in Baghdad.

  • Marine Lance Cpl. Efrain Sanchez Jr., 26, of Port Chester, N.Y.; assigned to Headquarters Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.; died July 17 due to a non-hostile incident at Camp Blue Diamond, Ramadi, Iraq.

  • Army Pfc. Oscar Sanchez, 19, of Modesto, Calif.; assigned to 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis, Wash.; killed Dec. 29 when a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device struck his observation post in Mosul, Iraq.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Charles R. Sanders Jr., 29, of Charleston, Mo.; assigned to the 5th Battalion, 159th Aviation Regiment, 12th Aviation Brigade, Giebelstadt, Germany; killed April 6 when the CH-47 helicopter in which he was riding crashed in Ghazni, Afghanistan. Fifteen service members were killed or are unaccounted for in the crash.

  • Army Spc. Gregory P. Sanders, 19, of Hobart, Ind.; assigned to 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor, Fort Stewart, Ga.; killed in action in Iraq.

  • Marine Pfc. Leroy Sandoval Jr., 21, of Houston; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.; killed March 26 by hostile fire in Anbar province, Iraq.

  • Army Spc. Matthew J. Sandri, 24, of Shamokin, Pa.; assigned to the 82nd Forward Support Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division, based at Fort Bragg, N.C.; killed March 20 when his living area came under a rocket attack in Fallujah, Iraq.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Barry Sanford Sr., 46, of Aurora, Colo.; assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 101st Support Group, Fort Campbell, Ky.; died of non-combat-related causes July 7 in Balad, Iraq.

  • Army 1st Lt. Neil Anthony Santoriello, 24, of Verona, Pa.; assigned to 1st Battalion, 34th Armor, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kan.; killed Aug. 13 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his mounted reconnaissance patrol vehicle in Khalidiyah, Iraq.

  • Army Spc. Jonathan J. Santos, 22, of Whatcom, Wash.; assigned to the 9th Psychological Operations Battalion, 4th Psychological Operations Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, N.C.; killed Oct. 15 when a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle in Karabilah, Iraq. Also killed was Sgt. Michael G. Owen.

  • Army Pfc. Brandon R. Sapp, 21, of Lake Worth, Fla.; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas; killed Aug. 15 when his M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle hit an improvised explosive device in Najaf, Iraq.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Cameron B. Sarno, 43, of Waipahu, Hawaii; assigned to the 257th Transportation Company, Army Reserve, Las Vegas, Nev.; died Sept. 1 when he was hit by a truck while changing his vehicle’s tire in Kuwait City, Kuwait.

  • Air Force Staff Sgt. Scott D. Sather, 29, of Clio, Mich.; assigned to 24th Special Tactics Squadron, Pope Air Force Base, N.C.; killed in action on April 8, 2003, in Iraq.

  • Marine Lance Cpl. Jeremiah E. Savage, 21, of Livingston, Tenn.; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, at Camp Pendleton, Calif.; died May 12 of wounds received due to hostile action in Ramadi, Iraq.

  • Army Sgt. Stephen P. Saxton, 24, of Temecula, Calif.; assigned to the Army’s 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Carson, Colo.; killed May 3 when his unit was conducting a route security mission and an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee in Baghdad.

  • Army Spc. Phillip N. Sayles, 26, of Jacksonville, Ark.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Wash.; killed May 28 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his security position in Mosul, Iraq.

  • Army Sgt. Paul A. Saylor, 21, of Norcross, Ga.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 108th Armor Regiment, Georgia Army National Guard, Calhoun, Ga.; killed Aug. 15 when his Humvee accidentally rolled over into a canal in Mahmudiyah, Iraq. Also killed were Sgt. Thomas J. Strickland and Spc. Joshua P. Dingler.

  • Marine Lance Cpl. Michael P. Scarborough, 28, of Washington, Ga.; assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Hawaii; killed Oct. 30 by enemy action in Anbar province, Iraq.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Michael W. Schafer, 25, of Spring Hill, Fla.; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, Vicenza, Italy; killed July 25 when he was shot by enemy forces while on a quick reaction force mission in Oruzgan, Afghanistan.

  • Army Sgt. Kenneth J. Schall, 22, of Peoria, Ariz.; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 70th Armor Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, Fort Riley, Kan.; killed May 22 when the Humvee in which he was riding was involved in an accident in Yusafiyah, Iraq.

  • Army Sgt. Kurt D. Schamberg, 26, of Euclid, Ohio; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y.; killed May 20 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee in Baghdad.

  • Army Capt. Robert C. Scheetz Jr., 31, of Dothan, Ala.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, Baumholder, Germany; killed May 30 when his vehicle hit an improvised explosive device in Musayyib, Iraq.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Daniel R. Scheile, 37, of Antioch, Calif.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 184th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, California Army National Guard, Oakdale, Calif.; died Sept. 24 of injuries sustained Sept. 23 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his M113 armored personnel carrier and enemy forces attacked with small-arms fire in Baghdad.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Jens E. Schelbert, 31, of New Orleans; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Ga.; killed Oct. 1 when his forward operating base was attacked by enemy forces using indirect fire in Ramadi, Iraq.

  • Army Chief Warrant Officer 4 Chris J. Scherkenbach, 40, of Jacksonville, Fla.; assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), Hunter Army Airfield, Ga.; killed June 28 when an MH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed while ferrying personnel to a battle against militants in eastern Afghanistan.

  • Army Pfc. Jason D. Scheuerman, 20, of Lynchburg, Va.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Ga.; died July 30 of non-combat related injuries in Muqdadiyah, Iraq.

  • Army Spc. Justin B. Schmidt, 23, of Bradenton, Fla.; assigned to 4th Battalion, 27th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Armored Division, Baumholder, Germany; one of eight soldiers killed April 29 by a car bomb as his unit was doing a dismounted improvised-explosive device-sweep in Baghdad.

  • Marine Lance Cpl. John T. Schmidt III, 21, of Brookfield, Conn.; assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.; attached to 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force; died May 11 of wounds sustained in an explosion on Jan. 30 while he was conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Anbar province, Iraq.

  • Army Spc. Jeremiah W. Schmunk, 21, of Richland, Wash.; assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 161st Infantry Regiment, 1st Calvalry, Washington National Guard, Moses Lake, Wash.; killed July 8 when his vehicle came under attack by rocket-propelled grenade and small-arms fire in Baghdad.

  • Army Pfc. Sean M. Schneider, 22, of Janesville, Wis.; assigned to the 115th Forward Support Battalion, Fort Hood, Texas; killed March 29 in a vehicle accident near Baghdad.

  • Marine Cpl. Richard P. Schoener, 21, of Hayes, La.; assigned to 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii; killed May 8 while conducting combat operations in Alishang, Afghanistan.

  • Marine Cpl. Dustin H. Schrage, 20, of Brevard, Fla.; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, at Camp Pendleton, Calif.; found dead on May 6 in Anbar province, Iraq. The cause of death is under investigation.

  • Army Maj. Mathew E. Schram, 36, of Brookfield, Wis.; assigned to the Headquarters & Headquarters Troop Support Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Carson, Colo.; killed by enemy fire May 26 in Hadithah, Iraq.

  • Marine Lance Cpl. Brian K. Schramm, 22, of Rochester, N.Y.; assigned to 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.; killed Oct. 15 by enemy action in Babil province, Iraq.

  • Marine Lance Cpl. Edward A. Schroeder II, 23, of Columbus, Ohio; assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve, Columbus, Ohio; attached to Regimental Combat Team 2, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward); killed Aug. 3 when his amphibious assault vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device during combat operations south of Haditha, Iraq. Also killed were Marine Lance Cpls. Michael J. Cifuentes, Grant B. Fraser, Aaron H. Reed, Kevin G. Waruinge and William B. Wightman.

  • Marine Cpl. Nathan A. Schubert, 22, of Cherokee, Iowa; assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Hawaii; killed Jan. 26 when the CH-53E helicopter in which he was riding crashed near Rutbah, Iraq.   • Air Force Master Sgt. David A. Scott, 51, of Union, Ohio; assigned to the 445th Communications Flight, Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio; died July 20 of a non-hostile cause in Doha, Qatar.

  • Army Spc. Justin A. Scott, 22, of Bellevue Ky.; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y.; killed when a weapons cache exploded Jan. 29, 2004, in Afghanistan

  • Army Chief Warrant Officer 2 Joshua Michael Scott, 28, of Sun Prairie, Wis.; assigned to the 1st Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.; died May 27 of injuries sustained on May 26 when his OH-58 Kiowa Warrior helicopter came under attack from small-arms fire and crashed in Buhriz, Iraq. Also killed was Chief Warrant Officer 4 Matthew Scott Lourey.

  • Army Pfc. Kerry D. Scott, 21, of Mount Vernon, Wash.; assigned to 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y.; killed Oct. 6 in Iskandariyah, Iraq, when his convoy was hit by an improvised explosive device.

  • Army Spc. Stephen M. Scott, 21, of Lawton, Okla.; assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 2nd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Carson, Colo.; died on Aug. 23 near Fallujah, Iraq, from non-combat injuries.

  • Army Pfc. Timothy J. Seamans, 20, of Jacksonville, Fla.; assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga.; killed Aug. 18 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee following a mine-assessment mission in Samarra, Iraq.

  • Army 1st Lt. Aaron N. Seesan, 25, of Ohio; assigned to the 73rd Engineer Company, 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Wash.; killed May 22 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee in Mosul, Iraq. Also killed was Army Spc. Tyler L. Creamean.

  • Marine Lance Cpl. Juan E. Segura, 26, of Homestead, Fla.; assigned to 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.; killed Nov. 9 by enemy action in Anbar province, Iraq.

  • Army Spc. Marc S. Seiden, 26, of Brigantine, N.J.; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.; killed in action when his convoy was ambushed by the enemy who used an improvised explosive device (IED), small arms fire, and a rocket-propelled grenade, on Jan. 2 in Baghdad.

  • Army Capt. Christopher Scott Seifert, 27, of Easton, Pa.; assigned to the 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.; killed in a grenade attack near the Iraq-Kuwait border.

  • Army Sgt. Danton K. Seitsinger, 29, of Oklahoma City; assigned to 486th Civil Affairs Battalion, Army Reserve, Broken Arrow, Okla.; killed when a weapons cache exploded on Jan. 29, 2004, in Afghanistan.

  • Marine Corps Pfc. Dustin M. Sekula, 18, of Edinburg, Texas; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, Calif.; killed April 1 by hostile fire in Anbar province, Iraq.

  • Army Spc. Bernard L. Sembly, 25, of Bossier City, La.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 156th Armor Regiment, 256th Brigade Combat Team, Louisiana Army National Guard, Shreveport, La.; killed May 19 when he was shot while conducting dismounted combat operations in Baghdad.

  • Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew K. Serio, 21, of North Providence, R.I.; assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.; killed April 5 by hostile fire in Anbar province, Iraq.

  • Army Sgt. Juan M. Serrano, 31, of Manati, Puerto Rico; assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 37th Armor, 1st Armored Division, Friedberg, Germany; killed in Baghdad July 24 while changing a tire on an M998 vehicle. It fell on him, inflicting a fatal head injury.

  • Marine Lance Cpl. Nazario Serrano, 20, of Irving, Texas; assigned to the Combat Service Support Battalion 1, Combat Service Support Group 11, 1st Force Service Support Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.; killed Jan. 30 by enemy action in Anbar province, Iraq.

  • Marine Lance Cpl. Devon P. Seymour, 21, of St. Louisville, Ohio; assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve, Akron, Ohio; killed June 9 in an explosion while conducting combat operations with 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), in Haqlaniyah, Iraq. Also killed were Lance Cpl. Dustin V. Birch, Lance Cpl. Daniel Chavez, Lance Cpl. Thomas O. Keeling and Cpl. Brad D. Squires.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Michael B. Shackelford, 25, of Grand Junction, Colo.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Howze, Korea; killed Nov. 28 when his unit was conducting a dismounted patrol and encountered enemy forces using small-arms fire in Ramadi, Iraq. Also killed was Army Sgt. Carl W. Lee.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Wentz Jerome Henry Shanaberger III, 33, of Naples, Fla.; assigned to 21st Military Police Company, 16th Military Police Brigade, XVIIIth Airborne Corps, Fort Bragg, N.C.; killed March 24 when he came under attack by individuals using small arms and an improvised explosive device as he was investigating a suspicious vehicle in Iraq.

  • Army Sgt. Jeffrey R. Shaver, 26, of Maple Valley, Wash.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 161st Infantry, Army National Guard, Spokane, Wash.; killed May 12 when his convoy vehicle hit an improvised explosive device in Baghdad.

  • Marine Lt. Col. Kevin M. Shea, 38, of Washington, D.C.; assigned to 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.; killed Sept. 14 by enemy action in Anbar province, Iraq.

  • Army Cpl. Timothy M. Shea, 22, of Sonoma, Calif.; assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Benning, Ga.; killed Aug. 25 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his position in Husaybah, Iraq.

  • Army Spc. Casey Sheehan, 24, of Vacaville, Calif.; assigned to 1st Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas; killed April 4 when his unit was attacked with rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire in Baghdad.

  • Army Sgt. Kevin F. Sheehan, 36, of Milton, Vt.; assigned to 1st Battalion, 86th Field Artillery, Army National Guard, Williston, Vt.; killed May 25 when his unit came under mortar attack at Forward Operating Base Kalsu, near Iskandariyah, Iraq.

  • Army Sgt. Ronnie L. Shelley Sr., 34, of Valdosta, Ga.; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 121st Infantry Regiment, 48th Infantry Brigade, Georgia Army National Guard, Albany, Ga.; killed July 30 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee while he was on patrol in Baghdad. Also killed were Staff Sgt. David R. Jones Sr., Sgt. 1st Class Victor A. Anderson and Sgt. Jonathon C. Haggin.

  • Army Chief Warrant Officer 2 Steven E. Shephard, 30, of Purcell, Okla.; assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.; killed June 27 when his AH-64D Apache helicopter crashed near Taji, Iraq. Also killed was Army Chief Warrant Officer 4 Keith R. Mariotti.

  • Army Sgt. Daniel Michael Shepherd, 23, of Elyria, Ohio; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division (Mechanized), Fort Riley, Kan.; killed Aug. 15 when his M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle hit an improvised explosive device in Ramadi, Iraq.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Kristopher L. Shepherd, 26, of Lynchburg, Va.; assigned to the 767th Ordnance Company, 63rd Ordnance Battalion, 52nd Ordnance Group, Fort McNair, Washington, D.C.; killed Feb. 11 when an improvised explosive device detonated during clearing operations in Baghdad.

  • Army Spc. Michael K. Spivey, 21, of Fayetteville, N.C.; assigned to the 5th Battalion, 159th Aviation Regiment, 12th Aviation Brigade, Giebelstadt, Germany; killed April 6 when the CH-47 helicopter in which he was riding crashed in Ghazni, Afghanistan. Fifteen service members were killed or are unaccounted for in the crash.

  • Army Maj. Christopher J. Splinter, 43, of Platteville, Wis., assigned to the 5th Engineer Battalion, 1st Engineer Brigade, based in Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., killed while in a vehicle that was struck by an improvised explosive device, on Dec. 24 near Samarra, Iraq.

  • Army Sgt. Marvin R. Sprayberry III, 24, of Tehachapi, Calif.; assigned to the 4th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, Vilseck, Germany; one of four soldiers killed May 3 when their military vehicle left the road and flipped over in a canal in Balad, Iraq.

  • Army Pvt. Bryan Nicholas Spry, 19, of Chestertown, Md.; assigned to D Comany, 1st Battalion, 504th Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.; killed Feb. 13 when his vehicle rolled into a water-filled ditch in Baghdad.

  • Marine Cpl. Brad D. Squires, 26, of Middleburg Heights, Ohio; assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve, Akron, Ohio; killed June 9 in an explosion while conducting combat operations with 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), in Haqlaniyah, Iraq. Also killed were Lance Cpl. Dustin V. Birch, Lance Cpl. Daniel Chavez, Lance Cpl. Thomas O. Keeling and Lance Cpl. Devon P. Seymour.

  • Marine Lance Cpl. Michael L. Starr Jr., 21, of Baltimore; assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Hawaii; killed Jan. 26 when the CH-53E helicopter in which he was riding crashed near Rutbah, Iraq. Twenty-nine Marines and one sailor also were killed.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Eric M. Steffeney, 28, of Waterloo, Iowa; assigned to the 184th Ordnance Battalion, 52nd Ordnance Group, Fort Bragg, N.C.; killed Feb. 23 when an improvised explosive device detonated in Tuz, Iraq.

  • Air Force Lt. Col. John Stein, 39, of Bardolph, Ill.; assigned to the 41st Rescue Squadron, Moody Air Force Base, Ga.; killed in a HH-60G Pave Hawk crash on March 23, 2003, in Afghanistan.

  • Marine 1st Lieutenant Andrew K. Stern, 24, of Germantown, Tenn.; assigned to 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, Calif.; died Sept. 16 of injuries sustained in enemy action in Anbar province, Iraq.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Joseph W. Stevens, 26, of Sacramento, Calif.; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry, 1st Infantry Division, Vilseck, Germany; killed Jan. 24 when his Bradley fighting vehicle overturned in Mohammed Sacran, Iraq. Four other soldiers were also killed.

  • Army Sgt. Patrick D. Stewart, 35, of Fernley, Nev.; assigned to the 113th Aviation Regiment, Nevada National Guard, Stead, Nev., killed Sept. 25 when his CH-47Chinook helicopter crashed southwest of Deh Chopan, Afghanistan.

  • Army Sgt. 1st Class James J. Stoddard Jr., 29, of Crofton, Md.; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Fort Bragg, N.C., killed Sept. 30 when his vehicle accidentally rolled over in Afghanistan.

  • Army Spc. Michael J. Stokely, 23, of Sharpsburg, Ga.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 108th Armor Regiment, 48th Brigade Combat Team, Georgia Army National Guard, Griffin Ga.; killed Aug. 16 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his dismounted patrol in Baghdad.

  • Idaho Air National Guard Maj. Gregory Stone, 40, of Boise, Idaho; assigned to 124th Air Support Operations Squadron, Idaho Air National Guard, Boise; died of injuries suffered in a grenade attack March 22 near the Iraq-Kuwait border.

  • Army Pfc. Kristofor T. Stonesifer, 28, of Missoula, Mont.; assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Benning, Ga.; killed in action when his UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crashed during a training mission, on Oct. 19, 2001, in Pakistan.

  • Army Spc. Chrystal G. Stout, 23, of Travelers Rest, S.C.; assigned to the 228th Signal Brigade, South Carolina Army National Guard, Spartanburg, S.C.; killed April 6 when the CH-47 helicopter in which she was riding crashed in Ghazni, Afghanistan. Fifteen service members were killed or are unaccounted for in the crash.

  • Army 2nd Lt. Matthew R. Stovall, 25, of Horn Lake, Miss.; assigned to the 367th Maintenance Company, 298th Corps Support Battalion, Mississippi Army National Guard, Philadelphia, Miss.; killed Aug. 22 when an improvised explosive device exploded near his vehicle in Mosul, Iraq.

  • Marine Sgt. Kirk Allen Straseskie, 23, of Beaver Dam, Wis.; assigned to 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, Camp Pendleton, Calif.; drowned while attempting to rescue crewmembers of a Marine CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter that went down in the Shatt al Hillah Canal in Iraq.

  • Army Sgt. Francis J. Straub Jr., 24, of Philadelphia; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 111th Infantry Regiment (Mechanized), Pennsylvania Army National Guard, Philadelphia; killed Aug. 9 when a mine exploded and enemy forces attacked using small-arms fire as he was investigating a rocket-propelled grenade incident in Bayji, Iraq. Also killed were Pfc. Nathaniel E. Detample, Spc. John Kulick and Spc. Gennaro Pellegrini Jr.

  • Army Sgt. Thomas J. Strickland, 27, of Douglasville, Ga.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 108th Armor Regiment, Georgia Army National Guard, Calhoun, Ga.; killed Aug. 15 when his Humvee accidentally rolled over into a canal in Mahmudiyah, Iraq.   • Navy Quartermaster 2nd Class (SEAL) James Suh, 28, of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; assigned to SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team 1, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; killed June 28 when an MH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed while ferrying personnel to a battle against militants in eastern Afghanistan.

  • Army Capt. Christopher J. Sullivan, 29, of Princeton, Mass.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas; killed Jan. 18 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his parked vehicle in Baghdad.

  • Army Spc. John R. Sullivan, 26, of Countryside, Ill.; assigned to the 626th Forward Support Battalion, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.; killed Nov. 15 when two 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters crashed in Mosul, Iraq.
