Soldier killed during recovery mission in Iraq

TAMPA, Fla. — A 36-year-old paratrooper who was due to return home this month, was killed in Iraq, the Department of Defense said Saturday.
Sgt. 1st Class David A. Heringes, of Tampa, was on a recovery mission near Tikrit when he was injured by an improvised explosive device. He died at the hospital on Aug. 24, his father Ronald Heringes said.
Heringes loved working on cars and motorcycles and spending time with his two young children. A 16-year-veteran with the army, he had a passion for serving his country, his father said.
“He was proud to do what he was doing,” Ronald said. “He didn’t have any qualms.”
David Heringes was supposed to return home in August, but was recently given an extension.
He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.
