Soldier with Texas ties killed in Iraq

MIDLAND, Texas — A soldier from Midland and a Fort Hood-based soldier from Wisconsin are among the latest casualties in Iraq.

The family of Pfc. Clayton Welch Henson, 20, was notified Sunday of his death, The Midland Reporter-Telegram reported Monday. Henson died while serving in the Second Armored Cavalry Regiment’s 1st Division, based out of Fort Polk, La. The military has not released details of his death.

His stepbrother, Lex Lewis, said Henson believed the United States was performing a valuable mission in Iraq. He had joined the Army after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

“Once he said, ‘If somebody doesn’t do something about this, who’s going to?’ “ Lewis said. “He had a strong sense of duty.”
