Venango County soldier laid to rest

OIL CITY, Pa. — The first Venango County soldier killed in action in more than 30 years was laid to rest Friday.

Army Spc. Jonathan Roy Kephart, 21, of Oil City, died April 8 from injuries received in a roadside bombing.

Kephart’s funeral at Faith Baptist Church in Seneca was followed by burial in Brandon Cemetery with full military honors, including a 21-gun salute.

The last time a county soldier died in action was in Vietnam, where 23 soldiers died from 1965-1971. Their names are listed on a memorial dedicated in September 2001.
