CASCO, Wis. — A standing room only crowd said goodbye Thursday to a Marine killed in Iraq.

Cpl. Jesse Thiry, 23, was killed April 5 during combat in Iraq.

Gov. Jim Doyle and U.S. Rep. Mark Green were among the dignitaries who joined Thiry’s family and friends at the full military funeral at St. Peter Catholic Church in Lincoln.

Bishop David Zubik of the Green Bay Catholic Diocese presided at the funeral, along with the Rev. Dennis Drury and the Rev. John Doerfler.

Thiry, a 2000 graduate of Luxemburg-Casco High School, enlisted in the Marines and had been scheduled to be discharged in November after completing four years on active duty.

He was in Iraq only about a month before he was killed.

Casco Marine mourned; funeral Thursday

CASCO, Wis. — Flags at half-staff and signs reading “hero” and “genuine patriot” along Wisconsin 54 served as reminders Wednesday of a local resident killed in Iraq.

Friends and relatives gathered to mourn the death of Marine Cpl. Jesse Thiry, 23, of Casco, who was killed in combat last week. A funeral Mass was scheduled for Thursday, also at St. Peter Catholic Church in the town of Lincoln.

Pictures of Thiry flanked the casket, and bouquets of flowers in reds, whites and blues crowded the front of the church.

“Jesse, we were always proud of you and always will be proud,” said Anna Brien, Thiry’s 18-year-old stepsister.

Sue Thiry said the family had heard from her stepson’s Marine Corps unit.

“We received an e-mail this morning from (Jesse’s) unit stationed in Iraq. They are grieving as much as us,” she said.

From the e-mail, she read, “Jesse knew his job and he did it to the best of his ability. “He gave the ultimate sacrifice.”
