RESTORING A LANDMARK

The Pentagon’s five "wedges" run from midpoint along the building's outer and inner walls; each includes one of the five corners. The hijacked jet that hit the building Sept. 11, 2001, struck the edge of "Wedge One," which was reopening after being fortified under an ongoing renovation program begun in 1993. The aircraft crossed into Wedge Two, where renovations were just beginning. Because of the renovations, both areas were partially vacant: Only 4,600 employees were in an area designed to accommodate more than 10,000.
