Less than a year after terrorists crashed a hijacked jet into the Pentagon, Project Phoenix
rebuilt the facade and employees began moving back into offices destroyed in the blast.

BUILDING IT BETTER — TWICE

The outer wall of the Pentagon section, or wedge, damaged Sept. 11, 2001, already had been upgraded against terrorist attack, including blast-proof windows. The post-attack rebuilding effort incorporated even further improvements, including strengthened interior walls, better sprinklers and more halls and stairways for use as emergency exits.
