About the designers:
Wickham holds a master's degree in architecture from Rice University and has studied architecture and design at the University of Virginia.
Zawadzki holds a master's degree in architecture from Yale University and has worked in Paris and Russia.
The pair started working together in 1997 in Paris and moved the New York in 1999. They recently collaborated on the design of the St. Paul Hotel in Montreal.

About the design:
"We set out to design our sadness away by reflecting on permanent as well as living things and to design a memorial that is not so vulerable to time, but that is active in time."
