About
the design:
Visitors will have the opportunity to share their thoughts and experiences,
pay their respects and offer words of compassion, wisdom and support.
The monument is constructed from 184 glass monolithic elements. They are
distributed on a footprint 370-feet long and 20-feet wide. The monoliths
stand of an island of granite in a reflective pool. The monoliths allow
enough space in between for cool air to be drawn from below. This will
allow condensation to accumulate on the lower portion of the monoliths
and create visual layering effects. A visitor just has to touch the surface
of the glass to leave an impression. The names of the victims who died
in the Pentagon attack will be etched into the top half of the monoliths.
