Sgt. Miguel Delgado and Spec. Sara Avila are both military police officers at Fort Lewis, Wash. Delgado is with the 51st MP Detachment and Avila with the 170th MP Company. They have been dating for about a year. Avila recently deployed for the war on terrorism.

Sara,

By the time you read this letter we’ll have been together for a year. I can’t believe it’s been that long. One down, many to go. I always knew there was a chance that the Army could distance us, but I didn’t think it would happen. Then it did. In the back of my head, I always thought I would be the one to go. It’s what I trained for. But they called your number instead. From the moment you got in that van to get on the plane, I have missed you. I have never missed anybody like I miss you. Your return can’t come quick enough, baby. I can’t wait for you to get completely settled in our new apartment. I know you’ll love it.

Sarah Stephenson met Army Capt. Jesus Botello at a country-western bar in North Carolina when he asked her to dance. She “stepped all over his toes, but he came back for more.” They’ve been together ever since.” The couple, now married a little more than three years, has no children, but are the proud parents of two cats, Ricky and Lucy. Jesus, a 15-year veteran, deployed in November to Kuwait with the 513th Military Intelligence Brigade, based at Fort Gordon, Ga.

Dear Jesus,

I hope that by the time you see this letter we will have had another opportunity to speak on the phone. I miss the sound of your voice.

Belinda Bukovitz has been married for more than a decade to Army Capt. Michael Bukovitz, who has deployed for Operation Enduring Freedom as blood platoon officer-in-charge with the 32nd Medical Logistics Battalion at Fort Bragg, N.C. Belinda, a former teacher, now stays home with the couple’s children, 7-year-old Nathan and 3-year-old Kenadee.

Michael,

I just wanted to write you a letter to let you know that we love you and miss you. I remember saying to you just before you left, “I don’t think I can do this again.” I know you could be gone for a year, which I can’t even comprehend. I take it one day at a time. After a couple of days, I realized that I could do this again. Nathan, Kenadee and I stand behind you completely.

Holly and Army Staff Sgt. Edward Nicorvo have been married more than six years and have three young children. Edward, assigned to the 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y., is deployed in Uzbekistan.

Dear Ed,

Well, today was yet another long day. Antonia is doing well in school, but misses you deeply. Nicholas is learning to talk more and more daily, and his speech therapist says that by the time you return he should be saying sentences. And baby Noah has five teeth now.

Tonya Stives and Army Master Sgt. Rahamon Phillips, a ground surveillance systems operator about to be assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division in Korea, have been together more than six years. Phillips, who has been in uniform 16 years, is a veteran of the Persian Gulf War and two tours in Bosnia. He has a 13-year-old daughter, Brandie, from a previous relationship, and he and Stives have one child of their own, 4-year-old Cayleb.

Hi Rock!

It’s that time again. We are making piles called “going” and “staying.” The duffel bags are packed and waiting by the door. Once again we are exchanging last-minute instructions on what to do in case of the many things that always seem to go wrong the minute you walk out that door. Yes, my love, it is another long separation.

Margie Uthe is married to Pfc. Michael Uthe, an infantryman assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky. He deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan, in January. The couple, originally from San Antonio, has been together for four years and married for almost three. They have three children, and Margie is pregnant and due to have their next child “at any time.”

To my beloved husband,

We all love and miss you deeply. You are in our thoughts and prayers every day. We want you to know how very proud of you we are. Things here are lonely without you, and we can’t wait until the day you return to us. The baby hasn’t been born yet. I know you are sad because you won’t be here for the birth of our child, but I want you to know we are all fine.
