Christy Farris’ brother, Senior Airman Chad Pursifull, has deployed as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. Christy lives in Macon, Mo.

Dear Chad,

You are my baby brother and all my life I have tried to protect you — and now you are the one doing the protecting. I knew from the moment you were born that you would grow up to be someone special, and I was right. Grandpa Pursifull would be so very proud if he could see you now.

When you left, you said that every time I saw a flag I was to think of you and remember that you were doing this to make our country safer and to make our family proud. It is scary to not really know where you are and when you will come home. Every time I hear any news or mention of your plane my heart stops and I say a little prayer for you to come home safe.

When I see the yellow ribbon tied around my tree, I tell myself that one day I’ll be able to take it down, that you’ll be home soon. But I also know that I feel safe at night knowing that you are protecting us. Your commanders say you are the best and that’s why you were sent over there. You do not brag about your accomplishments, you say that you are just doing your job, and you don’t expect thanks. That is why you are a true hero. Thank you for protecting all of us and being my hero.

Love,
Christy
