Navy HM2 Michael Foust writes a letter to his wife, Oanh, in Palmetto, Fla., on Dec. 28 while he is deployed to the U.S. operating base at Kandahar International Airport, Afghanistan. (Rob Curtis, Times staff)
Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Michael Foust, Fleet Marine Force, 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, based at Camp Lejeune, N.C., writes from Kandahar, Afghanistan, to his wife, Oanh, in Palmetto, Fla.

Dear Oanh,

I may have missed the holidays, but I know being here has helped preserve our freedom for the future. One day Matthew will understand what all of us have done and will maybe someday follow in my footsteps.

Being away from you two has only strengthened my love for you and my love for our great country. The sacrifices everybody made to come here have only brought us together. We’ve developed our own family away from home. Knowing you’ll be there when I get home only makes me know that my job is just as important to you as it is to me.

Love you,
Michael
