Air Force Staff Sgt. Vivian Bender writes to her husband back home at McGuire AFB from the U.S. operating base at Kandahar airport, Afghanistan, on New Year’s Day. (Rob Curtis, Times staff)
Air Force Staff Sgt. Vivian Bender is a command and control journeyman who has deployed for Operation Enduring Freedom with the 721st Air Mobility Squadron Tanker Airlift Control Element out of McGuire Air Force Base, N.J. She’s originally from Portsmouth, Va.

Hello Honeybun,

First, I want to tell you how much I love you. I really miss you and Antondre very much. I never realized how good we have it in the United States. We take so much for granted — hot meals, showers, running water.

We are currently in field conditions, eating MREs and drinking bottled water. The latrines are amazing. The stalls are made of wood with holes cut in them … basically a hole to do your business. But despite everything, everyone’s spirits are so high. Teamwork is great! I am so amazed. Through it all, I continue to thank the Lord.

God Bless and Love,
Your wife
