For Air Force noncommissioned officer Anna F., who asked that her family’s identity be withheld, this is not the first, or the longest, deployment away from home. Her husband, who is also in the military, is at home taking care of their 6-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter.

Dear husband and children,

I love you very much and thank you for keeping me in each of your hearts. I miss you so much! Knowing you’re praying for me and taking care of each other helps me do my job here. I can’t wait to call again and hear your voices!

Sweetheart, you’re a super dad, and you’re doing a great job. The stars are still beautiful at night, and I always think of you when I go walking before bed.

My white tennis shoes are brown again, and I guess I’m trying to see how long I can go before I absolutely have to throw them in the washer. We’ve got dressers in the tents now, which makes this a little easier. No more digging through green bags looking for T-shirts or socks.

I’m so proud of you. I know how difficult it is working and taking care of the kids. Thank you for all you’ve done and are still doing, and thank you for always being there when I get home. I love you!

Kids, this is the world’s biggest sandbox, and every time I walk somewhere I imagine how much fun you’d have playing in the sand ... and how dirty you’d be! Thank you for taking care of each other. I miss you both so very much! I’ll call you soon. I love you all with my whole heart and soul. Take care, and God bless you and keep you.

Love,
Mom
