Army 1st Sgt. Daniel Hill, with the 202nd Military Intelligence Battalion out of Fort Gordon, Ga., is deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan, for Operation Enduring Freedom. Here he writes to his two children.

Dear America, and especially Dan and Dominyque,

Thank you for your support. I am honored to be a part of Operation Enduring Freedom. After 18 years of service and transcontinental travels, I feel obligated to rid the world of terrorism. It’s a small price to pay for future generations. The world is becoming increasingly smaller, and America, the leader of the free world, has to ensure the world is safe for future generations.

Happy New Year to you, Dan and Dominyque. The sacrifices I make today are for your future. Although we’re miles apart, you are not out of my daily thoughts. Daniel, good luck and enjoy your last year of high school. Dominyque, congratulations on your report card, keep up the good work. America, thank you for your support and keep the faith. We will endure.

Love,
Daniel
