Hood soldier killed at Iraqi checkpoint

FORT HOOD, Texas — A soldier assigned to Fort Hood was killed when his unit came under enemy fire south of Balad, Iraq, the Department of Defense announced on Wednesday.

Sgt. Atanacio Haromarin, 27, of Baldwin Park, Calif., was manning a checkpoint when his unit came under fire on Tuesday from rocket-propelled grenades and small arms, the military said.

Haromarin was assigned to Battery C, 3rd Battalion, 16th Field Artillery Regiment at Fort Hood.
