Army Staff Sgt. Terry W. Hemingway

Army Staff Sgt. Terry W. Hemingway, 39, of Willingboro, N.J.; assigned to C Company, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, Ft. Benning, Ga.; killed when a car exploded next to his Bradley Fighting Vehicle while traveling down a street in Iraq.

Army Staff Sgt. Terry Hemingway was a 19-year Army veteran who had been stationed in the Panama Canal Zone, Germany and Korea before going to Iraq. He had planned to retire later this year.

Hemingway, 39, of Willingboro, N.J., and based at Fort Benning, Ga., was killed April 10 when a car next to his Bradley vehicle exploded.

At his funeral, he was awarded the Purple Heart and the Order of the Purple Heart Distinguished Service Award.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene, and three children, Danisha, 7, Venetia, 9, and Terry Jr., 11. His 35-year-old brother, Army Sgt. Gary Hemingway, 35, also was serving in Iraq and was reassigned to escort Terry’s body home.

Sheryl Tinsley, his sister-in-law, said Hemingway was born in South Carolina, but grew up in Trenton, N.J. He lived with his mother in Willingboro before enlisting in the Army.
